Hello my dearest darling followers!
This morning (while I was awake but still in bed. That's holidays for you...) my Voltaire tickets arrived at the front door, so I'm now in a super pumped mood! XD
As I'm sure you've gathered, I'm now in the second last week of my winter holidays, and they've actually been really fun and rewarding. I spent my first week off in my home town attending a music camp that I used to attend while in high school. I also got to catch up with my dad which is something that I don't often get to do, so that was nice. This was the first time I attended since 2009, so I've been in total five years at this camp. I started in 2006, when I had only been playing flute for about 4 months (I was in the beginner ensemble then). That was so much fun and I learnt so much from working with suck amazing tutors and conductors. I was in the symphony orchestra (most advanced) on flute and learnt piccolo for this orchestra for the first time ever (well apart from once for a few minutes many years ago) which was really challenging to pick up in only one short week. I was also in the elective Senior Winds ensemble playing flute again, which was invitation-only to the most advanced students. It was also great catching up with all of the people I lost direct contact with when I moved to Melbourne.
Apart from that I've been playing too much Sims, playing flute a lot (So much technical work!!!) and trying to organise my semester 2 for uni in a couple of weeks.
I hope everyone else is having a good winter/summer as well

When Music and Life become One
Hi guys, sorry for the unexplained absence... I currently still in the middle of exams! Gah! No one likes exams. So far I've completed two written exams and submitted my folio of creative work (for Poetry class) and so I only have a small amount of sight reading (the exam literally goes for five minutes, so it's really short but very difficult!) and a prac exam (flute) in just over a week, and then I'll be on holidays free to blog as much as I want!
Here's a preview of what I tend to see for most of the day... (kept small for reasons....)
Andante et Scherzo by Ganne. Here's a recording if you're interested. =D
My life is a music stand.

Goths at Folk Festivals 2012 editions Part 1
Hello dear readers. Sorry for not posting again- I'm now at the beginning of my SWOTVAC week which means that exams are literally next week. I'm no longer able to afford the luxury of wasting time reading blogs and watching YouTube videos until I'm completely finished with my exams. That should be in about 2.5 weeks! So soon! I can't believe how fast my first year of university have flown by! I'm been so busy with assignments, homework and music preparation. If you weren't already aware, I've now completed 1/3 of my Bachelor of Music. Recently I had to choose my major. At the moment I've decided to major in Music Performance, but I may decided to change that if it becomes too demanding- I tend to suffer from jaw problems relating to my flute playing, and so I haven't been physically able to complete enough practice. Also, this year at uni has really opened my eyes to what is required and expected from a professional musician. I've really had to examine and change my music related habits.
Anyway, if you will remember a post or two of mine from way back in 2010 in this blogs humble beginnings, I posted about Goths (me, specifically) and their reaction and interaction with folk festivals. Particularly this post. Now, my writing style has certainly developed since then; some of it just makes me cringe. I'm tempted to go back and edit things, but it's more honest if I just keep it all the same, maybe adding some obvious tangents if I want to.
The festival in question is held every two years, and in a month or two I shall be returning once again this year in the first week of December. While I won't be repeating myself again about the features, this time I shall intend to capture and document the life of a Goth (again, me) at a folk festival, and everything that involves. It's very different to a Goth festival, to say the least. I may also be heading to a few more in the near future, depending on my plans to celebrate the New Year.
Earlier this year, in March about a week after I turned nineteen, I attended the Port Fairy Folk Festival. While I don't remember much about the festival now, something exciting did happen... At 0.25 seconds into this video, you'll see me noodling around on a whistle that was on sale. I was so excited when I found this video. One of my sister's friends had noticed it while browsing through YouTube. This gives you just a glimse of the variety of characters found at folk festivals. Each festival is different, and has it's own mix of interesting music and folks (pardon that pun. I literally didn't even notice until a few mintues after! It is staying though! XD)
I can't believe all of the attention my Tumblr has been receiving lately. I've gained at least 17 follows in the past week alone! Please go and observe my activities there, and if you like what you see then please follow me! XD
More posts on these topics will follow in the near future.

University
Tomorrow, Orientation week is starting for me. I am actually terrified, because Melbourne Uni have ruined my timetable so nothing is being displayed properly. Of course I only worry about the unimportant things. =/
Anyway, I am about to start my Bachelor of Music. I am excited because hopefully this is the gateway into my career as a classical musician. As you know I've been studying music essentially full time since I was seven. While I've attended normal schools, my main focus throughout school has been to improve my ability as a musician. This has meant taking extra, out of school classes, preparing for exams, doing hours of practice each day (For the next 4 years I'm going to be doing 4 hours of practice a day!) and listening to as much music as I can. But, I do it because I love it. There really hasn't been anything like music in my life. Dance, art and writing all come close, but I havent put in the dedication, time and money in the same way as with my music.
Anyway, I probably should go and... do more practice. =/ That's my life from now on.

P.S Please, I know that you read my blog, so comment! I want to hear about what you have to say and what I should write about. I check my stats every day and reply to all comments. =D

Voltaire on Saturday night
I've already posted about the Voltaire show in Melbourne. That show has now been, and it was one of the best live, 1 person shows I have seen, and there have been many of those.
Voltaire is my favourite song writer, and my favourite 'non-classical' musician/ composer. (How very un-musical of me to say that... =P), so I may be a bit biased when I talk about the quality of the performance.
I saw the show with the Green Fairy from If I Only Were a Goth and Kitty Lovett from Bloggery of a Gothcat and her boyfriend, and saw many other friends there as well.
Despite the heat, (It was a cool summer day, so we had all rugged up a fair bit. The problem was the show was in a sunken part of the bar and the temperature was about 10* warmer, at least...) he was incredibly energetic, humorous and natural on stage.
I purchased three CDs beforehand, which was a good idea as one sold out in mere minutes afterwards, as well as a Deady 'Not Bootleg' toy. I got them signed, and that resulted in one being crotch-rubbed from the influence of a friend (I didn't complain, mind you XD). Apparantly, that CD needed to be buffed before writing...
Rouge Fonce opened the show. They're a Melbourne dark carabet gothic rock band. I wasn't too crazy about their music, but they played a few songs that I loved. They were also high energy, and I felt that they were a fitting, if not somewhat contrasting, beginning to the evening.
After the show, Voltaire stayed out in the bar for hours, signing CDs, having photos taken and talking to fans. He only disappeared for a few minutes to change clothes, which really is one of the reasons he is my favourite. Many rock stars avoid their fans and spend time after the show backstage, but Voltaire was interacting with his fans and generally making them feel more appreciated.
Of course, we asked for photos, and he obliged us all.
While in the photo I look rather uncomfortable, I am most certainly not. (Maybe freaking out slightly...) Just after the photo, he commented I 'smelt really good, like good enough to eat', which was followed by a rather awkward referenece to him being a creepy old man. I didn't exactly think it was creepy, but it was certainly unexpected. =)
I didn't want to tell him I was wearing a men's perfume at that point... XD
After some time of chatting to people and drinking (red wine in my case), we said goodbye. He hugged each of us, followed by some rather, ahem, interesting behaviour regarding Shaun and Steph (seperatly), and kissed on each of our cheeks. Then we left the venue. It was a fantastic night, and I encourage everyone who has the opporturninty to see him live. While his recordings are so good, Voltaire comes alive as a performer. Also, the person he is on stage and in recordings is the person he is off stage. There's no change or contrast to his personality or actions, which is so good to see.

End of December
This is a very personal photo for me, because it was my last performance to date, and my last ever school performance. (There have been hundreds). Here I was performing Vivaldi's Winter (II and III) arranged for flute choir, which is part of the Four Seasons and is one of my favourite pieces of music. Myself and another flautist were performing solos in this arrangement, so it is a particularly special and memorable ocassion in my school and musical life.
I received this rose at the end of the concert I was performing at in the above photo. Traditionally, red roses are given to the year 12 music students and musicians by their teachers at this performance which occured after our exams. I took this photo a few days before I moved out of my old house in to the place I am living now. (Chunky heels are a hassle to pack!) The rose lasted a week or so and I disposed of it on the day of moving house. Also that day I found a four leaf clover, which I consider to be a positive sign that the move was the right decision and there was hope for my future. (I had my university audition for a Bachelor of Music the day later, which was successful. I have almost finished enrolling for this year and I am so excited!)
Goodnight all, and my best wishes.

Updates
So I'm not sure how much you bloggers know, but I'm essentially all settled in to my new house with my mum, sister and brother. Things are naturally chaotic, but slowly sorting themselves out. That does explain why, even though I haven't been studying, I haven't been able to write anything substantial. =(
But, last week I had my audition for Melbourne University Conservatorium. I was rather stressed about it, but I felt I played well in the end... and I've recieved good news, but I won't tell until it's all official. =P
Also, on Saturday I'll be heading to a Tim Burton- ish themed party for the 18th birthday celebrations of one of my good friends. I've decided to dress up as a Mrs. Lovett type character so I don't have to go out and buy more clothes. As nice as that would be, I spent a shocking $65 on Illamasqua foundation yesterday (It is lovely) and subsequently cannot afford to spend money...

No more school
Yesterday was my last ever official day of school, and my high school graduation was last night. I must admit, I am so relieved to be finished with school but I didn't feel the 'rush' that I was expecting to feel. I believe that this is because my Music Performance- Solo practical exam was on Sunday, the day before yesterday, and I had been preparing for that exam for 12 months. I think I wrote about it in my previous post. Anyway, while I believe that that exam won't be my hardest exam, it is the exam that I wanted to be most successful in, as I have been studying classical music for 11 years and want to make a career out of that. Subsequently that exam certainly had the most weight attached to it, and I certainly relaxed afterwards. My dad took my brother and myself out for lunch which was nice, and he bought me a book. =)
Yesterday we had a dress up day. There wasn't a theme, but fancy dress in general. I decided to dress up as Red Riding Hood, and on Saturday, as a much needed distraction from the ever present nerves building up to Sunday, I went to Spotlight and bought some cheap panne velvet in a beautiful dark red and sewed a cloak and hood (by hand). I don't know how to use a machine, and the one that we currently have is apparently not very good. It took about 5 hours in total, which was quite efficient as it was the first article of clothing I had made from scratch, and the website I was using as reference was in inches, which makes things more difficult.
Anyway, this post has taken far too long to publish, so I'm just going to wrap it up by saying I only have one more exam to go and that is next week! I am slowly getting through this!!!

Things to do after Year 12
Life as I used to enjoy it has recently come to an almost stand still, due to Year 12. Lately I haven't been able to spend hours writing blog posts, watching TV shows and playing games until 3am, or spend my time composing music as I love to do, simply because of the amount of school work, study and practice that has been required of me. I do push myself academically, and that doesn't improve the situation. Rather, it results in unreasonable expectations, and the feelings of failure when I don't succeed where I want to.
But, VTAC applications are in (except for that supplementary form that I forgot... ) and in exactly one month from tomorrow I will be sitting my last exam for school. Ever. Scary stuff to say the least.
Next weekend is my solo flute exam, which requires a 25 minute solo performance with pieces that meet a variety of criteria. Overall I do feel comfortable with my performance, however there is one piece I am studying that is AMus standard that is... well technically challenging to say the least. Highly atonal with rapid ascending passages in the upper register, combined with quaver triplets over crotchet triples in the piano, with... you get the idea. It's undoubtably the hardest piece I've ever studied on any instrument.
Year 12, and I'm guessing most senior high school years across the world, are demanding and very stressful. I am living on the notion that I only have one week of compulsory classes left ever, coffee and the promise of a fresh start once the whole thing has ended, regardless of the outcome.
So, it seems natural to compensate for the things that have been missing from my life this year, starting from the 16th of November, after my Music Performance- Solo written exam (which happens to be my brother's 13th birthday!)
1. Get my L's
It's something of a tradition for Australian young drivers to get their learners when they are 16, and to churn away at those hours so they can get their P's when they're 18. I've been 18 for over six months now, and I still don't have my L's. It's getting rather frustrating, because sometime last week my only valid form of ID went missing, and I still haven't found it.
2. Get a job.
I have been living off the support of my parents and centerlink for the last two years, with the excuse the I have been concentrating on my studies, and that all of my free time has been taken up with flute playing. That isn't going to be an excuse over the summer, or next year even if I am at university. I do like the idea of getting a job at a nice coffee shop or tea house, or even working at Lush.
3. Move house.
This is going to happen anyway, I know, because we have bought a house just a suburb away. Exciting, and requires some packing... =S but overall it should be a positive experience.
4. Buy a computer.
This will not happen for a while now, as I am terrible at saving money. I really want a computer, preferable a desk top so I can fill it up with new games. Laptops simply don't have the grunt for my tastes.
5. Eat healthier.
Year 12 takes its toll on you due to the lack of sleep, and I don't think my diet has been overly healthy this year. I simply haven't been eating enough lunch or breakfast, so I haven't been able to focus during the day at school.
6. Sleep in.
Goodness, I love my sleep, and I am looking forward to when I am able to lie in my coffin from 4am until 1pm without worrying that I am missing classes or not spending my time studying.
7. Read.
I have always read, but this year I have been somewhat restricted in what I read because I have had to read my Literature texts multiple times each. I am looking forward to being able to read without having to analyse the text, but simply enjoy it.
8. Have a clean bedroom.
This is so hard for me. I haven't sustained any attempt to clean and organise my room since year 2, and that's not an exaggeration. When I have the time...
Anyway that's all. I should SHOULD finish my Styles homework before my SAC on Tuesday. (SACs in term 4... Yes indeed. =/)

Day 9
Day 9 – What genre of music do you dislike?
There are actually quite a few genres of music that I really really dislike.
Probably the genre that I like the least would be funk, followed by reggae. Soul would be in there too, as well as rap. urban, disco and pop- punk. I'm also not a fan of most Country music, particularly that found in Australia. (Random fact: Lee Kernaghan's cousin was my piano teacher for quite a few years!)
However, there are a few songs on Voltaire's country album that made me question my opinion on country music. Namely The Churchyard and When You're Dead.
I'm also not much of a fan of really bleepy synth pop, although there are some exceptions.
The most interesting one would be Jazz. For many years I wanted to be a professional jazz pianist. The only problem is that the only styles of jazz that I could really get into Dixieland/ New Orleans and Big Band. In other words, what those wanky jazz fans consider to be 'cliche'.
So now I really don't like jazz in general.
For a musician, I know that there are plenty of styles that I don't like at all, but rather than dwell on that and attempt to change it by listening to music that I don't want to, I simply prefer to listen and perform what I love, because I love it.

Bach, "Little" Fugue (G minor, BWV 578)
So there's something that I am obsessed with at the moment.
This graphical representation is a great example of the construction of music, in this case a fugue (FWI, fugues are cosidered to be the most complex music form. This one is a very simple one. In a fugue there is one melodic figure that is repeated in different parts at various times. Fugues therefore have to be highly structured and the composer needs to be careful about not only the melodic pattern but also all of the underlying harmonies that will sound together. Fugues are very diffifult to write well, but when they are they sound fantastic.)
There are far too many examples on YouTube to share, but they are all amazing. Listen, watch, learn and be educated!!!!

Diversity in Music
I've noticed that there seems to be a fair amount of negativity towards Goths who also actually listen to music that isn't Goth. This is absoutly crazy and insane.
As a musician I understand the huge benefits of listening to a broard and diverse range of music. That doesn't however explain why some people, including Goths, believe that a person is 'not Goth' becuase they for example also listen to metal.
This happened to me about three months ago. I was in one of the numerous Gothy stores in Melbourne. (Peril Underground, which would potentially be more of a Punk store, but had some delicious Victorian and Steampunk pieces of clothing. Yum. The store is also a music and apparall store and a tattoo parlour.) Anyway, I bourght the Voltaire CD Then and Again. There was an older Goth (I'm not sure if she was an Elder Goth or just a fair bit older than me) who was paying for her CD. "Voltaire?" She raises her eyebrows at me and looks as if I was wearing kahki green cargo pants and a bright yellow T shirt. "Yeah." I reply in my quite voice. *Another Tangent* The store in question was in fact the store that Voltaire performed in August, which I was incredibly lucky to see. XD. The store owner obviously had something to do with the guy as a result.*
"Did you see him perform?" Asked the owner.
"Um, I saw him down here was my reply."
And then all of a sudden the woman was like "Oh yeah he's such a good entertainer."
Well, I was confused. I had thought that the lady was critisising my taste because Voltaire was "Not as Goth" as her superior taste in music. (which is absolutly ridiculous, if you ask me)
I left the shop with two conclusions. One: I had simply misread her expression and she was just making conversation. Or Two: She has a mild case of Gothier than Thou and she felt that I didn't deserve to be in her deep dark presence...
But the main point of the story is that it is really imporant to appreciate different styles of music, and to not judge someone because of their tastes. I'm fully awear that Goth is what it is because of the music, but that will not stop me from listening to bands like Rapskallion, or Nightwish, Tom Waites, or even bands like The Cat Empire, which I do listen to. I am a classical musician so it is understandable that I would not be in the stage I am now without listening to a Hell of a lot of 'Classical music'.
I still regard classical music as one of my favourite styles of music of all time. Particularly Classical (as in the period), and Romantic music. There will also always be space in my soul for Celtic music, because that was my introduction to music performance (about ten years ago when I was seven...)
And jazz. Yes, Jazz. I used to want to be a professional Jazz pianist, a few years ago. I don't anymore.
And I love my Industrial. Love Love Love!!!
In a nutshell, for God's sake please do not judge a person on their music preferences, regardless of whether you believe that music is a defining part of whatever group they belong to or not. There are x number of music styles and sounds, so it would be almost impossible for another individual to have the same tastes as you. Also, it is important to have a broad and varied apprecation for music because everything you listen to enhances your ability to understand and enjoy more music.
Wow, that was quite an effort for 10am on a Sunday...

Listening to... nothing because my sister is asleep in the next room.
