My Self-Imposed Style 'Rules'

I don't actually believe that there is such thing as clothing rules that must not be broken, if they are you're a fashion failure type of thing. That silly. Anyone can wear whatever they choose to wear.
However, with this in mind I've noticed over the last few years I've began to develop certain ideals about what I do and do not like to wear, or wear in combination. This is just personal aesthetics and my own taste and should have no impact with anyone else's taste in clothing. It could be that these self-imposed restrictions   are actually limiting my ability to express myself through my clothes.
But, here we go.

http://mererecorder.tumblr.com/post/48703501268/by-wan-mei

- Only one set of stripes. If I'm wearing striped socks or stockings, I feel a bit silly if I also wear striped gloves or a striped shirt. I actually don't know why I feel this way. I think that it just looks too same-y or something. Oddly enough I'm a huge fan of those striped dresses; I don't feel that these are Stripe-Overload at all.

-No bare legs with short skirts. This is due to my very destructive sense of self and body image. I am (finally) confidant enough to show my legs under a short skirt, but only if I have a pair of opaque or lace tights as well.

-No hoodies/casual jackets with maxi skirts. I adore maxi skirts, long skirts and circle skirts. I tend to live in them, however I feel that casual slouchy and comfy jackets look foolish with these. I think it's because it's the concept of fullness with fullness in regards to the volume of clothing doesn't do it for me, which makes sense due to my  hourglass-ish shape. Also, I tend to think that maxi skirts have a touch of elegance to them, at least mine does, and the casual teemed with elegance just doesn't work for me.

There we go. Please tell me if you have strange style 'things' or choices that affect your outfits, or if you agree/disagree these are restrictive or allow for more structure within a wardrobe.

Corset Purchase

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4t4o650bE1r8367ao1_500.jpg
I am currently writing thins while completeing an assignment for uni at the moment, so you'll have to excuse me. =D
Life in general has been very hectic and crazy lately, with assignments pileing up and me getting quite sick during this winter. During the rare moments when I have been ill or swamped with work that needs completeing and could possibly take the time out to blog, I've been completely out of ideas, and in general I do enjoy writing semi-decent content for all of you lovelies to read.

As well as my study at the Conservatorium and everything that involves, I've certainly been more interested in exploring the side of my personality that enjoys going out clubbing, socialising and buying lots of pretty clothes and things. I tend to go in 'waves' if you like, where I'll be a hermit that stays at home, not dressing up at all and instead spending my spare time playing games, or where I'll be going out regularly and generally putting more time, money and efford in my appearence.

For example, about a week and a half ago, I purchased my first corset; a beautiful satin and brocade steel boned one by Dark Muse Corsettery. I am very much in love with it. XD
I've also been exploring more of a 'Trad' aesthetic in to my everyday and clubbing attire. I've always loved Trad Goth, Romantic Goth and Deathrock as visual aesthetics, but lately I've been exploring even more creative ways to express myself through these styles of clothing, and have been having lots of fun in the mean time.

I've been thinking that I would like to make this blog more personal, including photos and such, but I'm very tempted to remove all of my personal photos, as recently some of my photos were stolen and edited without my permission. The solution would be to edit some watermarks, but I don't have a piece of suitable photo editing software yet that would make that possible. If anyone has any suggestions, do let me know. I'd be ever so grateful. 0=D

In the mean time, I'll continue to post pretty pictues I've found on Tumblr. As always, I don't own these photos. If you are the owner and want them removed, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Absurdity in the Mundane

Something that has continued to facinate me for many years through my art and writing is the concept that something extrodinary can be found in the ordinary, or the everyday.
Whether this is visible, such as the living candelabra Lumiere from the Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Actually, the whole movie really is an example of this fantastic concept, where all of the objects are animated, lively and display human characteristics.
It can also be expressed on a more subtle level, where the extrodinary elements are not visible on the surface, such as the locket in Harry Potter. (No spoliers here! XD) Such objects appears to be commonplace, yet contain magical and enticing secrets. Another great Disney example is Aladdin, where I quote 'the diamond in the rough', is used quite liberally. It also happens to be my favourite. =D

I feel that this mentatlity really manifests in my clothing style and just general interest. I think that, even though a simple pendant necklace for example really is just a hunk of metal shaped into an object, and probably bought for $10 off a lovely Asian lady at a market, we can pretend that it was stolen off the neck of a wizard in the heat of battle three hundred years ago, or passed down from teacher to student through the study of pyromancy. I'm really just coming up with ideas here but the point is that anything really has the potential to have some sort of mystery or deeper meaning, wheter it actually does or not is beside the point!
Further more, like work of art or a song, each individual can bring their own interpretation to an article, wheter it be expressed or not, creating a whole web of stories for you to indulge in.
If anyone has taken a look over on my Tumblr where I post pictures, you'll see this idea a lot, as well as lots of other pretty pretty pictures here.

In my drawing I tend to draw objects such as lampshades, chairs and tea cups and render them using highlighters, markers and lots of contrasting black over fluroescent colour. Often they are paired with extra limbs, severed heads and other deliciously macarbe imagery such as weapons. I do have quite a black sense of delight through my drawings.
Other good examples that I can think of are Alice in Wonderland (Almost all renditions of this classic story are good), work by Tim Burton, The Addams Family, Mary Poppins, any LARP type game I believe, the Borrowers, and plenty more. I appologise for the significant amount of spooky examples; I can only provide examples that I have seen before. XD

Please share your thoughts and any other examples. I would love to hear some feedback.

Outfit and Makeup Inspiration

I'm always looking at pictures for inspiration with my clothes and makeup. It's my dream that one day I'll be wealthy enough to be able to buy whatever I wanted, but nowadays, with my limited funds and everything, money to burn is scarce so I just have to make do with what I've got and customise it to suit. With makeup, many of the looks created can be recreated easilly but the problem lies in really nice technique, colour and fine aesthetic details. Sometimes my eyeshadows are just not pigmented enough, damn it!

Here are some pictures that I am inspired by at the moment.

Since when does one NOT love stripes?

I love the beautiful silken false lashes. Soft, light and dreamy makeup can be Goth, really it can! It works well here contrasted with deep red, glossy lips.

No matter what, to me Angelica Huston will ALWAYS be THE Morticia Addams. I love her 'classic glamour' look combined with the delicious morbidity of Morticia. Blood red lips and dark, contouring eye makeup, my dears. She will always be an inspiration to me. This, in case you're wondering, is from The Addams Family Values, which is my favourite. I still enjoy the first one, but I saw this one when I was about six or seven and it's such a big part of my childhood. The TV show is good too, but I haven't watched it as much.

Razor Candi looking amazing. I must admit that I've been getting more into Deathrock, Post punk and 'Trad Goth' music of late, and my clothing choices have reflected that. I love her strong lip and cheek makeup the most. I wish I had her bone structure to pull it off as well as she does... *sigh*

There are hundreds of fantastic photo on the internet. Inspiration is at your fingertips. Please share with me any photos or people who inspire your current outfits.

Clothing and Accessories

Last night I intended to write up a post on my mum's computer but after a rather unfortunate incident that involved me dropping my mum's laptop (the same one that has her PhD notes on it!) after my boyfriend dropped a heat pack onto my chest. The computer was fine, but it was rather distressing so that didn't encourage me to use the computer for much longer. None the less I'm attempting to write here at school while researching pictures to use for my Art folio. It's a bit distracting to say the least... becuase research does include reading long articles about my favourite games and Star Wars props do take up time... =)
I also should finish my Literature novel... and prepare for my Methods SAC on Wednesday, I really should.

Anyway, I'm here finishing this post on my mum's laptop (The same one that got dropped!!!)
This post is about Goth accesories and clothes, and why you shouldn't just buy everything you see.

Melbourne is rather infamous for a particular Goth shop named Victorian Gothic, or more commonly just Vic Gothic. The shop has a bit of a reputation of being expensive. I have bought items from there before (Namely hair dye, makeup, a skirt, some boots and an out for my year 12 formal that was on friday night, plus a few other things.)

Me and two amazing girls from my Maths Methods class
So anyway, enough with the outfit. The point about the shop is their range is simply far greater than almost all of the other Goth/ dark alternatuve shops that I've been into. Most of it is branded, 'off the rack' type wear, but there is lots of jewellery, dreadlocks, hats, gloves, shoes, bags ect.
I personally tend to dress in a more minimilist way than those brands, so many of the clothes aren't to my taste, but I really do love some of the cute, pretty and spooky accessories that are sold. I much prefer to buy generic, plain black and grey clothes and spend my money on, suprisingly, accessories to enliven my outfits.

While walking home from symphony orchestra rehearsals today, in the pouring, freezing rain, I remembered to check my school backpack to see if the rain had soaked through. It hadn't, which was a relief but it did concern me that if I had brought my canvas messenger bag, my phone, brand new flute (18th birthday present) and CAS calculator (the $200 one that I need to pass Methods and I cannot afford to buy a new one) would have been ruined. In other words, things wouldn't have been to great overall.
I though of the other bags I owned and my mind crossed to my super sexy, PVC coffin shaped bag. The really brilliant thing about PVC things is that they're waterproof. Sure, it's not exactly the sort of bag I'd bring to school, but I have been in the rain before with it and things were not wet in the slightest.
Simarly, leather and plastic shoes are far more likely to be waterproof than fabric shoes. Conversley (and because I know that it's summer for all of my northen hemisphere readers) clothes and accesories that are appropriate for dry or humid weather need to be carefully chosen. Any year 12 VCE student will remember the GAT that was sat a few days ago. Inside there was a question about fashion. As part of my essay I wrote that many followers of fashion are more likely to buy clothes that are 'in' than ones that are comfortable, flattering or practical. Personally I am only too happy to dress from toe to neck, but I know that there are some who prefer to show some skin, and I feel that many Goths (including myself), who by their nature are not restricted by the 'rules' of fashion, can, and do, wear what they please.
Therefore, I have my own 'rules' that I follow. I did NOT intentionally make a set of rules to follow, but this came naturally to me as I get dressed each day.

Number one- Dress according to the weather. Today, considering my awful 8:15 am class, I dressed simply with stockings, Knee high Docs, a lace mini skirt, grey T shirt and black school hoodie. Despite my more casual clothes, I was still late, but not as much as if I had dressed up more. Walking to school was freezing. So cold that it made me want to go home and get some gloves. On the flip side, sometimes it's freezing in the morning and by lunch time it's 26*c. Melbourne doesn't get as cold as somewhere like Canada, but it is alarming how many people assume that it doesn't get cold in Australia. It really does, I swear!

Number two- Coffins aren't for school. I have more bat and skull accessories than coffins, but they're are lurking in the depths of my lair. I simply don't want to draw any more unwanted attention to myself *Edited* because, frankly I am really really shy and don't have the confidence for them at school. Out in the city it's a different story. Similarly, I will not wear any of my famourly hand ripped stocking, fishnets or anything that may seem too sexual in a school or other professional environment. At school at least, I have a somewhat 'cute, quirky innocent' reputation... =)
Number three- No hoodies with long skirts. Yes the classic casual mixed with luxurious thing. This is something understood by many. I only own one hoodie and that's my year 12 one. It's nice, warm and comfortable so it is good for days like today but it looks silly teemed with long skirts. The same with lace gloves, beaded necklaces or anything else that has an opulent flair. Hoodies are for jeans and miniskirts. That is it. XD

Anyway, completly sorry and a thousand appologies for not being able to post lately. Y'all know the sob story, and don't need to be reminded again.

*Edited again* (P.S Sary, I wanted to reply to your comment, but E.I is being a pain and not letting me post comments, but I can blog fine. x)

Am I Goth because I wear black, or I wear black because I'm Goth?

No, don't leave! This is (hopefully) going to be a less superficial post than you might be thinking...

I have been musing quite a lot lately about the notion that maybe we are Goths because we, for example, like to wear black, or are interested in spooky things or all of those other things. I really do believe that this is the case for me.
Goth for me is something that has encompassed all of the interests I hold dear, but I have been wondering, maybe there are some Goths that have decided to 'be Goth' and then developed that 'thing' with all of the dark spooky stuff. You know what I mean, that deep understanding and familiarity with darker things. It's hard to put words to, but I hope I am succeding. It seems to be more of a 'superficial' way of thinking about things, because it would seem that an individual's first introduction to Goth was purely visual. Ah, but here's the catch... wasn't that the first thing I noticed when I first saw a Goth. I didn't think 'wow they sure love their Star Wars' or 'I can tell they like Nick Cave'.
I noticed how they looked. It was only later that I combined my love for black, a dark aesthetic, dark music and everything else with the visual aesthetics of Goth clothing that I love. So really, it appears to be a mixture of the two.

Anyway, tell me your thoughts about this.
